We keep the most commonly used sizes and models readily available in stock, ensuring short delivery times and reliable support for urgent replacement needs.

What is a Coupling?

A coupling is a mechanical component used to connect two shafts at their ends, allowing power to be transmitted between them. Unlike clutches, couplings are not usually intended to disconnect shafts during operation, although some torque-limiting designs can disengage or slip when the torque exceeds a set limit.

The main function of a coupling is to unite two rotating elements while accommodating a degree of misalignment, axial movement, or both. Choosing the right coupling—and ensuring proper installation and maintenance—can significantly reduce wear, downtime, and overall maintenance costs.

Main Types of Couplings

  • Rigid Couplings – provide a solid connection between shafts where exact alignment is critical. Any misalignment will directly affect performance and shorten service life.

  • Flexible Couplings – transmit torque while allowing limited angular, axial, or parallel misalignment, making them more adaptable to operating conditions.

  • Torque-Limiting Couplings – protect equipment by slipping or disengaging when torque loads exceed safe operating limits.

Electric Motors – Converting Power into Motion

Electric motors (e-motors) transform electrical energy into mechanical energy, driving a wide variety of equipment across marine and industrial applications. They can be classified based on:

  • The type of electrical power they use

  • Their intended application

  • Internal construction and design

  • The type of motion they deliver

Mechanical Seals – Preventing Leakage, Ensuring Reliability

Mechanical seals are essential components used in rotating machinery such as pumps and compressors. They prevent leakage by creating a tight seal between two flat, lapped surfaces: one stationary and one rotating with the shaft.

A mechanical seal typically consists of four main elements:

Primary sealing surfaces – the main contact surfaces that prevent fluid escape

Secondary sealing surfaces – support seals such as O-rings or gaskets

Means of actuation – springs or bellows that maintain contact

Means of drive – components that transmit rotational motion

Our Supply Capabilities

Planvision Marine Supplier maintains a comprehensive cross-reference database of mechanical seals from leading European and Asian manufacturers. This allows us to supply interchangeable and equivalent seals for a wide range of brands, including:

  • AES

  • Burgmann

  • Chesterton

  • John Crane

  • Pillar

  • Roten

  • Vulcan

How to Get the Right Seal

  • If you know the OEM seal type: Provide the seal type and shaft diameter, and we can supply a 100% equivalent replacement.

  • If the seal type is unknown but you know the equipment: Provide the equipment maker and type description, and we can identify and supply a fully compatible seal.

With Planvision, you get fast, reliable access to mechanical seals that meet OEM standards—helping minimize downtime and maintain operational efficiency.

Belt Transmission – Efficient, Flexible Power Transfer

A belt transmission is a system that uses a continuous loop of flexible material to connect two or more rotating shafts. Belts are placed over pulleys and can transfer motion either in the same direction or, when crossed, in opposite directions.

Belt drives are an economical and versatile solution for power transmission, especially when shafts are not perfectly aligned. They efficiently transmit mechanical power while providing smooth, quiet operation. Additionally, belts absorb shocks and damp vibrations, helping to protect motors, bearings, and connected machinery from sudden load changes.

Advantages of Belt Drives

  • Cost-effective: Less expensive than chains or gears for long-distance shaft connections

  • Simple & Low Maintenance: No lubrication required, minimal upkeep needed

  • High Efficiency: Typically 90–98% efficient (around 95% on average)

  • Flexible Alignment: Can tolerate some misalignment without affecting performance

  • Noise & Vibration Dampening: Cushions motors and bearings against sudden loads

  • Adjustable Speed: Step or tapered pulleys allow variation in rotational speed

  • Overload Protection: Belt slippage provides a natural safeguard against jams or over-torque
